Why does my 11 yr old Golden Retriever smell?

Thank you for clicking on my question! My dog Skippy is a healthy and active 11 year old Golden Retriever, but lately he’s been starting to smell. I clean him regularly and he eats healthy dog food twice a day. He’s extremely well taken care of, so I don’t think it’s caused by anything I’m doing. Whenever he is pet, he leaves some stinky oily stuff on my hands, and his coat has become very strange smelling. He never really used to smell like that. He has no history of problems and has only had slight fevers and hot spots, but other than that he has never had any health issues. PLEASE! I would really like to know what’s wrong, if there is anything wrong. Thank you!!!

First, I would have him checked out by the vet. A number of issues can cause dogs to smell. (But I do hope nothing is wrong!)

Second, you say a healthy food, but this is subject to many different opinions. Many lower quality dog foods (think purina, iams, science diet) have the potential to do a lot of harm to a dog’s overall health, including their coat.

Third, my dogs get salmon oil, vitamin e and eggs as a regular part of their diet- their coats glisten. :) Baths as needed and certainly not on a regular basis. You may want to consider using an oatmeal/aloe based shampoo for the time being (this will soothe the skin as well if he has any itching). Earth Bath makes great shampoos.

Good luck to you!
