Is dried dog food made with chicken and chicken by-products harmful for dogs?

Our vet tells us that chicken causes ear problems in Golden Retrievers. Purina’s Pro-Plan Weight Management contains chicken and its by-products, but we need a low-cal dog food.

I have never heard of chicken being a problem for dogs except in the area of allergies, but I do not know much about Goldens specifically. I would avoid food that has by-products of any kind in it though and would definitely avoid any food made by Purina. The low quality of that food, regardless of whether it has chicken or not, will cause all sorts of ear, skin, and digestive problems. I have a dog who needs low-cal and we feed her Blue Buffalo Weight Control, it is made with Chicken & Brown Rice (and no by-products!); you can find it at Petsmart. If you do want to avoid chicken though, Nutro Natural Choice is not as expensive as Blue Buffalo and has a lite version that is made with Lamb instead. Nutro products are not amazing but are definitely ten steps up from Purina and can be found at Petco.
