breed standards for designer dogs?

Do you think this would help breed healthier mutts if the AKC makes breed standards for designers? I don’t think the problem will go away, so I think at least trying to make guidelines might help what do you think?
I know that there are many bad “breeders”. but if just a handful would breed healthier, if there were guidelines for them, it could help some dogs maybe. Or at least raise the standards, somehow..
ah. I understand now. I guess back to just trying to educate others not to buy them?
Thanks everyone. I guess I felt this was a losing battle to *stop* designer mutts from being bred, so why not make them safe? But I see there is no way to breed them healthy/have standards.

In addition to what Basset said…Breed Standards are based on purebreds that have already been developed. People develop a dog for a job, and when this dog is of uniform type and is breeding true, they document it.

The Fox Terrier already existed as a ratting/hunting dog when its standard was drawn up by its fanciers. They took the best examples of their dogs and created a written description based on those dogs. Same for the Border Collie, the Siberian Husky, etc.

Writing a breed standard for a breed that doesn’t even exist is putting the cart before the horse…which is why I laugh when I see “standards” being created for crossbreeds that don’t even breed true.
