I wonder whether two fatherless boys and an immigrant coalminer’s daughter would have ever risen – or would ever have dreamt of rising – to the prime ministership or deputy prime ministership of Australia if they had suffered the iniquitous and underfunded education they have now inflicted on two generations of Australian public school children.
