Chew Guard Dog Toys

Why does my dog keep throwing up in the middle of the night?
He’s a 1 yr. old black lab/pit. He eats well. Gets plenty of exercise. We don’t let him chew up any non-food items, but he does chew on rubber toys, etc. He takes heart-guard, dog vitamins. He also gets the flea/tick stuff once a month. But the vomiting doesn’t correlate with that.
But about twice a month he wakes up in the middle of the night and throws up. Usually it’s just his food, sometimes it’s like bile.
Is this something common? Maybe it’s due to his heart-guard or vitamins? Why does it only happen at night?
Please help, dog lovers out there.

This does happen to some animals. It would be a good thing to talk to your vet about, just give them a quick call when you can!
In the meantime…it can be due to the pup having an empty stomach over night, or even having some acid coming up. It could mean a change of food is needed, although it is not happening all that frequently.
What time does the dog usually eat? Sometimes it is recommended to feed the dog later in the night, closer to bedtime. Otherwise, you can try feeding a plain peice of bread/toast as well to put a little something in the stomach.
Sometimes the gall bladder releases it’s acid before there’s any food in the stomach and the irritation can cause the vomiting. It can also cause ulcers and gastritis. Ask your vet about giving Papcid or Carafate. It will help ease gastritis and heal any ulcers your dog might have. He can take both Pepcid and Carafate because they are two seperate medications (Carafate is not an antacid). Dont give Tums or Rolaids….things like that, but you CAN give Alternagel (or Amphogel). It’s a liquid you can get over the counter but it doesnt taste well to dogs and is difficult to give. The Alternagel contains only Aluminum Hydroxide….Tums and Rolaids has other things in it that are not good for your dog. The easiest route would be the Pepcid pills, so ask your vet about that. Usually people try this for a week or so and, if it isnt helping, then we usually move on an check things like the dog may have a gall bladder infection, ect.
Hope that helps!
