How does a dog’s memory work?

I know that you can’t scold a dog for something it did earlier because it won’t understand or remember what it is they’re being punished for.
But what about short term memory?

For example, my dog just heard someone come in from outside and went over to the closed door waiting for me to open it. If I hadn’t, she would be standing there until she’d come over to me and paw at my legs. How long would she remember why she wants that door open?

And does this differ with different breeds like personalities? I have a purebred toy poodle – and a prissy one at that. Does she think differently than, say, a lab?

Its quite a complex question you pose, im not going to answer just how memories are stored but its the same as other mammals, how long would be depending on the Individuel dog tho, and yes different breeds do have different personalities, your dog would think like other dogs just like all humans think the in the same way, but even within the same breed would you have variable personalities as each dog is an Individuel
