Show dog breeders vs. quality dog breeders not synonymous.?

Most show dog people would like you believe they should be the only people breeding. I have spent quite a bit of time in the Doberman and Boxer show enviroments. Have owned some of the top champion lines. Bred for over 15 years and have placed over 60 puppies to new responsible owners. Ok first a given, we all who know anything, realize your not in business to make money. Any breeder who meets any standard of responsibity will spend much money and many many hours of caring for bitch and pups. Show dogs measure their looks and confirmation. I agree confirmation is important but even that said many people may differ on what think is a good attribute. they know little of the dogs Intellegence, personality and health back grounds. This to me results in cookie cutter looking dogs with little attention to the quality of pet that would be produced.

I’ve been in the show game for 32 yrs and it is one thing that is very true show dogs breeders are NOT necessarily top quality breeders. I have a beautiful Dobe whose sire is a Am. and Int. CH. multi BIS winner and his pedigree is almost all Chs. but he does not have the qualities to make a true working Dobe. A top quality breeder,IMHO, looks out for all the breeds requirements, Dobe=police dog, Lab=hunter, Gsd=herding and police dog. To me a true quality breeder breeds dogs with titles on both ends to show the dog is pretty, trainable, sound and capable of performing his breed function. All of my big dogs but my current Dobe have had pedigrees with both Ch., Obed. titles, and Schutzhund titles. I’ve shown all in the breed and obed. ring plus had them trained as Personal Protection dogs, shown a couple for their BH, and taken the dogs to nursing homes and Alzheimers units. My g/f had 2 Gsd from a top kennel in Ca that wins shows paw over fist and yet both had a bad hip, and neither had the nerve to be herding dogs or protection trained and would have led a blind person to their doom. Both were beautiful, we showed one and he did very well , the other was too fearful but since both had HD they became neutered housepets. Their sire was the top Gsd, at their national show one year.
