How do you get about finding a “stud” for your female dog and what are the procedures and cost usually?

I have a beautiful Sheltie that I’ve been told is show quality but we just do obedience and agility. She is lovely, highly intelligent and her personality is perfect. I would love for her to have puppies. I would keep 1 or 2 pups and others have already given me their numbers to contact them if we breed her. After having a litter, we will have her spayed. PLEASE DO NOT LECTURE ME ABOUT UNWANTED DOGS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SPAYING! She is AKC. I have done tons of reasearch on the actual pregnancy and whelping so I am well prepared. I just can’t find much info. on finding a stud. Does the owner of the stud get a fee and first pick of the litter or one or the other? And do you pay the stud owner, before or after you know she is pregnant? Does the female have to stay with the male or vice versa? Is there a standard contract that both parties can sign to ensure that no one is getting “scammed”? What’s the best way to find a stud? Is running an ad in the paper a good idea?

You can try looking on puppyfind.com and puppydogweb.com because most breeders will offer their male for stud services. Generally the stud owner gets either first pick of the litter or price of the pick puppy. You will have to have a written contract with the stud owner that covers how they will be paid and what will been done if she does not conceive. Usually you pay half of the stud costs (if they are choosing money instead of a puppy) at the time of breeding and half after the puppies are born when the stud owner signs the registration application for the litter, but some people like to be paid up front. Just make sure if you pay them up front that they have signed the litter application by the time that they receive payment. It is usually best to bring the female to the male. You can try running an ad in the paper, but you may only get people wanting to make money off of their dog so you will not get the quality that you could get from finding a breeder that offers a stud service.
