Dog Breed Personalities
Can you tell a dog’s personality from its breed?
Or would it be overgeneralization?
Ok, so we have behavior, trait, temperament and personality, all of which apparently mean different things. I guess, by personality, I meant a broader term but I wouldn’t know how to define it. Thanks for your input everyone!
Not even maybe. A lot goes into forming a dogs personality. While breed can contribute some traits actual breeding, training and socialization plays a huge part in it too.
Take for example my breed, the Chihuahua. Almost everyone see’s Chi’s as yappy, nippy, nasty little animals. That is because they are small and cute and few owners bother to train them. Fact is there are many like mine, well bred, well socialized and well trained. Hence mine are clam, well behaved and nip no one. Yap… yes when the doorbell rings until I tell them “enough” and then they are quiet.
It takes a lot to make up the personality of a dog. So much more than just the breed.
