Dog Breed Temperament Rating
Corgi owners/breeders: How are they with kids & how is their health?
We have been wanting a medium-sized dog (apartment owner says 50 lbs and under!) for a while now. So we are narrowing our search down and we think Corgis are adorable, but we don’t know much about their temperament and health. Overall, how would you rate their health on a scale of 1 to 10? Any major problems, like hip dysplasia or anything like that a common breed trait? Also, in your experience, how are they with kids? Our 1 year old daughter loves my sisters’ dog (lab mix), she climbs all over her, hugs her and gives her kisses! So we will be looking for a puppy or young dog, so he or she will essentially grow up with our daughter. We hope that will make for a great family dog, but if their nature is not a cuddly kid-loving pooch, I would hate to push it on the poor dog! Please let me know what you think, and other breed suggestions would also be appreciated! Thank you!!
I am the proud owner of two Pembroke Corgi’s. They are very nice sweet dogs. They are of course herding dogs, and will love to have exercise. They need it, as they love to play. They are great with kids, but remember when a child runs a corgi might want to chase them…but it can be curtailed. I have a granddaughter that is 13 months and my dogs just love her, and lay with her, and do not chase her at all. Their health is good, wash and wear they say. They have long backs, so jumping should not be encouraged, and they tend to get heavy..so keep them on a very good food, and exercise them. They love to eat, and are snack driven…so use a play toy or some sort of praise tool instead of biscuits all the time. They live long, and do shed, and yes I said shed, but regular brushing will help that out. They love to do agility, and are very smart. They do like to yap sometimes…as they do that with cattle, but also again training will heed that to. So in my opinion…a Corgi is a great all around dog. Also look into adopting one….on petfinder. Type in Corgi and so many will come up you will not be disappointed..my male Roper is adopted and is a great dog in every aspect. Good luck on your search.
