Differences between an English Mastiff and Great Dane?

I currently have 3 cats & a basset hound but soon I want to add a giant dog to our little family. I want a Dane and have been researching it like crazy for just under a year. My boyfriend wants a mastiff. I am trying to research more about the mastiff (in the hopes of proving that a dane is the right choice for our lifestyle) but they seem so similar in temperament, energy etc.

What are some major differences between these two breeds?

The average Great Dane is considerably more athletic than the average Mastiff. Some Danes are couch potatoes whereas the majority of Mastiffs are couch potatoes. After all, Great Danes were bred to hunt, hence their alternate name of “Boarhound.” They’re robust and energetic. (I mean, not compared to a Lab or anything, but, you know..) As puppies (until roughly three years of age), both have their energy, but for instance, I can skip walking my two-year-old Mastiff without much consequence. I don’t know if the same could be said for a Dane..

If you’re researched Great Danes so thoroughly, consider joining an online mastiff community to learn about Mastiffs, too:

Most of the owners have Mastiffs, although there are some other mastiffs (Neopolitans, Dogue de Bordeauxs, et cetera) and even a few Great Danes floating around. The members are very friendly, so if you have any more concerns about Mastiffs, they’d be happy to help and could probably help compare the two breeds.

ETA — Sombra, some Danes can slobber with the best of them.
