Does anyone know what breed of dog this is?

I live in SoCal and lately I’ve been seeing a lot of little, gold, fox-like dogs with curled tails that look like a Shiba Inu or a Finnish Spitz, but less stocky and with a shorter coat. I saw them a lot in Japan as well, and I’ve been trying to find out what type of dog this is with no luck. It may be some mix of the Shiba Inu, but all the pictures I’ve found of that breed don’t look quite right. Any ideas? Thanks.

You may have simply seen a non-typey shiba inu. I cannot think of any dog that resembles a Finnish spitz http://www.hangtownkc.org/images/04Show/Sun/nonsportgp1.jpg or shiba inu http://www.marmafarms.com/shibainus/images/Joe.jpg. The only dog that comes to mind is the schipperke, but they’re always black and vary in size.

A pomeranian http://www.silhouettepoms.com/gibson.php, as others have suggested, wouldn’t be right – they don’t remotely resemble a shibu inu or Finnish spitz.

EDIT: The basenji http://www.nobark.com/baruh1.htm certainly looks like a cousin of the shiba inu, but they are much larger and not always a shade of yellow – they often come in red, tricolor, and brindle, amongst others.
