In my last article, "How to make a claim for damages in Virginia due to a dog bite," we discussed some basic laws and other practical issues such as homeowners' or renter's insurance protects dog owners in such situations and provides for compensation to persons adversely affected by dogs.

Surprisingly, the answer is no, although experts believe that many of the animals of certain breeds of dogs are more dangerous and more violent than others.

According to a recent study by Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canario and their mixes are responsible for 74% of the attacks as a whole and 68% of attacks on children.

In their study, states Mr. Clifton, "pit bulls and Rottweilers are dogs not only must be handled with special precautions, but also should be regulated with special requirements appropriate to the risk they may pose to the public and other animals, if kept at all. "

Despite the views of these experts, almost all local ordinances Virginia has specifically stated that a dog is not vicious and dangerous only because it is a particular race.

As example, the Fairfax County Code, "No dog was found that a dangerous dog or vicious dog just because it is a particular race, nor is a particular breed of dog banned. "

In addition, Prince William County Code is not itself a rule that labels a certain breed of dog to be dangerous.

Another frequent question is whether the law will take into account the dog's owner that the blame for the behavior of your dog if the dog is running outside dog ownership without any restrictions.

The answer to that question is yes.

Most local ordinances require Virginia dogs that are released when they are away from your property and / or to remain on their property by either a fence or other obstruction.

In general, the wording of these local ordinances is that "any dog to run without restrictions."
