miniture Dachshunds who has owned one and what are your experiences of it’s health problems etc?

My bfs parents (thats who i live with) have been offered a mini dachshund puppy that will be ready in June this year. I love animals and have a Diploma in animal care so i know these dogs suffer bad back problems and can be left paralysed from rough handling, obesity, accidents and falls and just general back problems also am aware of the eye problems and internal organ probs BUT who has had a dachshund and never had a health problem? Or who has owned one and been very upset by the problems their dog has come across due to their elongated backs?

I have a mini dachshund(age 5) who ruptured a disc in her back. She was never allowed to jump on and off furniture, fit, not over weight, and was always handled correctly. I had researched the breed and knew that there was always that possibility, but it was still hard to handle seeing her paralyzed, and going through the surgery. It’s been 5 weeks since her surgery, and she’s getting movement back in her legs, and I’m hoping for a full recovery. Even the best bred, and handled dachshund can end up with back issues, it goes with owning the breed. I also have two other dachshunds ,a 7 year old, and a 3 year old that have never had problems. Do I still think it’s a good idea to own one? yes..even through the tough times with my dog’s surgery and recovery, my dog showed me that even in bad times, she never lost her spirit to live, and adjusted to her disability with no problems..humans can learn alot from them!
