Guard dog, good for a family/Single mother?

Hey all, I am a mother of one (15 mos) and I am looking to buy a new puppy/dog to fit in with, as well as add to our family. My sons father works second shift , and is gone until 1 a.m. sometimes later, and I have trouble sleeping, thinking that I am the only one keeping an eye out. Also, I am very active and like to go on exercise outings with my son, but am always nervous about skating, or running through the park and pushing the stroller by myself. I am not looking to raise an attack dog, I would treat him and love him just as I would any of my other dogs, just want to feel secure as a mother alone with my child. Also, we have a big family, and wouldn’t want them to feel nervous, or have a dog that would get anxious around strange children. Any other women in my spot with a “breed” of adivce? Please no negative comments, as this is already a sensitive issue, just looking for a dog breed to fit in with our family. No rude comments, I will report. Thank you.

No dog breed is naturally a guard dog in the sense you are thinking of.

All dogs are guard dogs in that they will bark if a stranger approaches your house.

If your dog is a large dog….a lot of strangers in the park will leave you a lone. But if your dog is a GSD or Dobie…people will respect that. Especially people who don’t know anything about either of the two breeds. And both are great for families.

For what you are looking for, you want a protection trained dog. Look to spend about 5000-8000 for one.

However, you can do a Google search for protection trained dogs. Usually they are dobies or gsd’s. And yes, a protection trained dog is fine for a family situation.

Here’s some web sites I found: http://www.mrazovack9.com/
