APBTs and Am. Staffs?

If someone came to you with a shelter dog and asked you what breed it was, would you be able to distinguish between an APBT and a Am. Staff.? If so, how would you do it since the standards in the UKC and AKC for the respective breeds are very similar?

Generally AmStaffs have a more bully look to them with heavy muscle development. Pits, especially from fighting lines, are slimmer and longer legged. AmStaffs LOOK tougher; pit bulls ARE tougher. However, as you pointed out, there is considerable overlap in appearance. It’s not always possible to be certain when you are looking at a dog with an unknown background.
