where’s a good place to buy a puppy?

Hi,
I was wondering where is a good place to buy a puppy near Gaithersburg maryland? I found a place called Just Puppies and another place, but reviews said they sold sick puppies, which i don’t want. I’m looking to buy a maltese or maltipoo. please don’t tell me to just go and find a breeder, i don’t know how, this is my first time and no one in my family has a dog as well so none of us really know.
does anyone know a good place?
Or how to help me find a breeder i guess?
petco and petsmart is pets supplies only,right?

There are wonderful dogs/puppies at the humane societies and shelters. With our falling economy, these family pets are being given up to our shelters as people no longer can afford to feed them, give them the veterinarian care, etc. There are alot of bad backyard breeders who do not know what they are doing. Pet stores are only in for the profit and do not care anything about temperament, and the health of the dog or puppy.

I want to add something about our good breeders. There are the breeders out there that truly care about their breed, show their dogs, etc. I think if you want a dog for just a companion and don’t want to get into the show ring, go to the shelter. If you want to get into the sport of showing your dog or puppy, then find a show breeder.

Another thing about the shelters and rescue. When I use to work as a trainer for PetSmart, I would call the new adoptees, to offer any help if they were experiencing any behavior problems, adjustment problems. Most of their answers were so positive, they couldn’t wish for a better dog. Alot of these dogs were in homes who have already have taken them to training classes. It would be a shame if they were euthanized because no one wanted them.
