Sheep Guard Dog Breeds
Cross or pure-bred? What did/would you choose?
Now I can understand police dogs, sheep dogs, guard dogs and so on but what is the fascination with pure breeds as pets? I’d love to hear from pure-breed owners and why they chose that specific breed. Certain traits they have perhaps? What are they?
I have too very beautiful cross breeds that are friendly and loving. They don’t do anything special, just love me. I picked both up from the same rescue centre over 5 years ago. Although I disagree with the way they entered the world I’m still glad as hell they did.
I choose my dogs based on how they fit into my family. I have had my share of mixes that were wonderful, great pets. But if I want to be sure a dog will fit well into my family, I can count on a sheltie. I like to groom, I love their loyalty, intelligence, and sense of fun. To me, no dog is prettier. Their energy level is perfect for me. I can deal with the barking. And I like to show, so mixes won’t do for that.
I don’t think a mix, especially a puppy, is a good choice for a family that has no dog experience. They have no idea what to expect. And since every lifestyle is different, my favorite breed may not be the best choice for someone else. If you are a person who hates being followed closely by their dog during their every move, DON’T get a sheltie. Such a person would probably do better with a chow. Hate hairballs? DON’T get a sheltie. Maybe a Chinese Crested for that person. Hate barking? DON’T get a sheltie. Try a basenji. There are 400+ breeds. There has to be a breed for you.
