How To Stop A Dog From Jumping
Many people complain that their dogs jump up, tear their cloths in so doing, and are a menace to visitors, old people and children. What they don’t seem to understand is that this jumping up is really a compliment. The dog only wishes to be near the face of its owner, which is a dog’s way of showing affection. This of course differs from the jumping up and biting which some dogs do. The instinct of the pack still exists in dogs today and can come to the fore-front if not curbed when the dog is at an early age.
Dogs must be mastered at some time in their lives if respect is to be gained in the master-dog relationship. When this confrontation takes place (if it does) varies from dog to dog, but the dog must never be the winner.
If the dog jumps up in a nice, friendly manner, the correction is to teach the dog to sit on command and stay sitting. Then as it approaches it is given the command “Sit” in plenty of time for it to drop into that position. Then the owner should of course get down on his or her knees and love the dog. At that height the dog can be near the owner’s face and get loving hands to gently scratch its chest.
To break a dog of the habit of jumping up takes two people, its owner and a helper. The owner comes into the house or yard where the dog is on a long cord and a correct choke chain. The owner should have been out for some time if possible so that the dog will be especially pleased to see them. The helper holds the cord. As the owner approaches the dog the long cord should be quite loose and as the dog goes to jump up, the cord should be jerked hard by the helper until the dog is pulled very sharply and unexpectedly to the ground with the command “Down.” If this is done several times, the dog has no idea where this correction is coming from and thinks well before repeating his jumping up.
It usually takes about a quarter of an hour at odd times to teach a dog this lesson, but the dog should not be depressed by this treatment; it must get enormous praise when it doesn’t jump up, especially if it sits in front of the owner, waiting for the praise it so deserves.
