For English cocker spaniel owners: are English cocker spaniels good pets?

I am thinking of getting a dog, and I took an Animal Planet dog breed selector quiz, and a dog that is 99% for me is the English cocker. They are pretty good, and I hear they do great with kids. Some people say they’re nippy, but you can train them out of that, right? Also, do their vet bills cost a lot? And about how long do they live? Are they good house pets? Please help! Give me all the information you can based on experience and fact please!

Although not noted for being ‘diggers’, some may become accomplished escape artists while individual dogs are known to climb fences! Requiring regular daily exercise such as a walk or an energetic game, the Cocker Spaniels are good swimmers and great watch dogs. Great with families and older people, these dogs are adaptable and robust enough to cope with treatment dished out by school-aged children but may tolerate very young children.

Requiring a moderate amount of care grooming, it is important to keep their coat clean and free of knots at all times and is easily done by daily brushing and bathing once a week. Basic trimming to be undertaken weekly, including the cutting of nails, removal of excess hair around ear passages, removal of hair between the pads and around the feet. If preferred you can chose to have your Cocker Spaniel ‘clippered off’ which in turn reduces the amount of grooming required

Life Expectancy is 10-15 Years

Because of their long ears, ticks and burrs can be concealed behind them as well as providing a warm, damp environment for infections. Night-blindness is known in the breed and Cocker Spaniels can become gluttons if permitted and will put on weight very quickly and it is advisable to monitor their diet and prevent a problem.
