Dog Breeding – Useful Tips

The decision to start a dog breeding business is not an easy one.  A lot of people are put off by the idea of dog breeding because of the hard work and heavy costs involved.  If you’re a first time breeder here are some tips to guide you.

Finding a suitable mate is one of the most important tasks.  You need to take your existing female dog into consideration when making your choice.  Try and visualise the future pups.  To produce attractive pups you will need to find a good looking mate.

The female dog’s health is also vital.  To ensure success in dog breeding you will need to take good care of your female dog’s health.  A healthy pregnancy will result in healthy pups; and the birth process will be easier for your dog.  Get dietary advice from a local vet; and ask about nutritional supplements.

You should develop a good relationship with your vet.  You will need his or her advice during breeding, pregnancy, and birth.  New pups should be examined by the vet in order to identify any abnormalities or defects.

Female dogs are more susceptible to reproductive problems than males.  Problems with the females can be corrected, but in the case of male dogs issues such as low sperm count, anatomical defects, spinal arthritis, brucellosis, and hypothyroidism need to be addressed quickly because they can affect the male dog’s breeding interest.

The commonest cause of a failure to breed is bad timing.  Female dogs experience long periods in heat, and it can be difficult to identify the perfect timing without hormone tests.  Ask your vet for advice about perfect timing.  If you’re in luck you’ll get it first time.  When the female dog reaches the age of one year she will start to heat up.  However, this is not the right time to start breeding and you should wait until she is at least two.

The heat period lasts between 10 and 12 days at a time, and starts when you first see the appearance of blood.  The female dog starts to behave differently, and you may notice a change in her temperament.  Put the male and female dogs together for a couple of days.  You will need to ensure perfect timing because otherwise you will have to wait six months before trying again.

Tell your vet when your female dog has been pregnant for 22 days.  You can then start looking for new owners for the puppies.  After several months you will be able to send the pups to their new homes.

Dog breeding is certainly rewarding but you will need to invest a lot of time, effort, and money before you can start to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Start looking for the perfect mate now.
