Many people do not give much thought to the breed of the puppy they buy. Sometimes they drive decisions, sometimes you just look cute in the window mascot Sotra. But because a dog be with you somewhere in between 7-16 years, you really need to consider a number of factors.

First, examine your life. How much space there is your house or apartment? How much space is your schedule – Do you need a dog that sleeps most of the day and do not require huge amounts of exercise, or is looking for a dog that will come running to you for an hour or more a day? Does your partner or children, or cats? All these things have an impact.

Also, do not forget your budget. Are you going to have money to spend on a lot of health care and huge portions of food, or you're on a tight budget?

If you're on a tight budget that will have to consider a small dog – simply because they eat less. A large dog can cost more than $ 50 a week in a good quality pet food!

Do not be fooled into thinking that if you live in an apartment you can only have a small dog. Very often this is the worst mistake of choosing a puppy. Some small breeds are very energetic and need much more than large breeds exercise. You can become your worst nightmare to bring a small dog home, only to discover that, if not taken in the park for two hours a day, will mourn and scratch and destroy her apartment. Then you'll be in trouble with their neighbors. Any race that is a breed of terrier type, or even of Malta, may be prone to be destructive and bored in a small space. You can find some great races much more placid – farmers and cocker spaniels are good, relaxed, even lazy breed that likes slumber on the couch while you work.

Be careful if you buy a purebred dog that was bred for a task. Hunting dogs, dogs used for breeding of sheep or cattle, or of breeds of dogs agricultural labor will be difficult to handle a puppy, regardless of the size of your home. Some dogs can jump fences six feet high so we will fight, even to keep them there. They need hours and hours of exercise out of place and love chasing balls, learn tricks and work. They're very smart, and if not getting exercise and mental stimulation they need, they will be miserable. Dogs with a strong herd instinct will round out the clothes, cutlery, children – everything that makes a noise and this can be very frustrating!

As you can see, choosing a race and learning the temperament of the dogs are of equal importance. The size is not one to consider. You should also consider the history of reproduction – a purebred puppy is more likely that conditions may be genetic and more prone to illness and problems with legs and hips, which require expensive bills, and often result in lower life expectancy
